Lighting Up the Elements

We have already known the concept of third edition International Light Festival SKYWAY that will be held on August 9 – 13th. Gothic Old Town will be dominated by five elements: earth, fire, air, water and space ether. The fascinating light installations will be prepared by the international and local artists who will take viewers on remarkable journey at the intersection of science and art. The artists can submit their projects to March 31.

The most representative buildings of urban architecture: Old Town Hall, Collegium Maximum, Moat of the Teutonic Castle, Centre of Contemporary Art will be in the hands of artists who use light as a plastic material of art. On the website of the festival: http://www.skyway.art.pl are presented the proposed localizations for light installations and the application form for the artists who want to participate in the festival.

International Light Festival SKYWAY is a unique spectacle of light, which attracts every year thousands of spectators. “SKYWAY just like others light festivals held in Venice, Vienna, Lyon presents art in a modern way. The festival combines the light art and astronomical tradition of Toruń – explains Agnieszka Marecka, coordinator of the event. SKYWAY is a non-proft event, is close to us idea of the art in public space, the art involving the audience.”
This year edition of the festival refers to the classical concept of the four elements: earth, water, fire and air. The coexistence of the four elements as the basis of the material world and its phenomena described Empedokles. Aristotle systematized the concept of basic elements and added to them the fifth element – ether – symbolizing the quintessence, the divine substance. The Greek conception of the elements influence on the European tradition and culture.

“Skyway’s 2011 artistic program once again celebrates Human imagination in a world which is becoming more and more infinite but also more and more proximate to our reasoning, by means of contemporary science, namely astronomy, astrophysics, astrobiology – says Mário Caeiro, Artistic director of SKYWAY. Since the stars are closer and in reaching for them again we want to understand also our own fundamental “elements” – forces and interactions ruling inside us.
The organizer of the International Light Festival  SKYWAY is Municipal Institution of Culture Toruń2016.
