Orbiting Toruń

Today at 6 p.m. The City Office of Toruń launches the first municipal social website in Poland — orbiTorun.pl. The portal aims at creating an online community around the ideas of Toruń and open society.

Today there is no effective communication without the use of what is modern. Without the portals allowing to find like-minded people and share with them both information and feelings. The creation of Toruń social networking site is an opportunity for even better communication with and between residents and lovers of Torun, which is crucial for our city’s effort in the European Capital of Culture 2016 bid.

What differs orbiToruń from other social networking sites is the local government and civil accent. The website will be regularly visited by the city officials using their “official” and specially designated user accounts. A whole section of the site will be devoted to ideas for our city. Therein the people of Toruń — and those who simply love our city — will be able to jointly develop the best ideas for Toruń.

E-newspaper, being a civil journalizm module, will be an another important element of the portal. Each of the participants will be able to write his or her text, which —after being accepted by the editor-in-chief  — will be published on the front page. In other words, orbiToruń is planned to be a contemporary e-agora, striving for the best standards of its ancient equivalent.

Creators of orbiToruń strongly claim that, despite being funded by the city, the portal will remain independent and apolitical. It is also important to add that the website, run by a non-profit foundation “Stabilo”, will also be free of intrusive ads.

Our institution’s profiles on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and „Nasza Klasa” attract many users and we do hope that the scheme will be the same with orbiToruń. Because the contact with people is important!
